An integrated circuit or functional block within a larger chip that generates audio waveforms for sound effects and music. The Programmable Sound Generator (PSG) produces simple tones and noises by controlling the frequency and amplitude of square waves or other basic waveforms. While largely superseded by more advanced audio codecs, PSGs are still found in some industrial alarm systems and operator feedback devices for their simplicity and low cost.
