Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004582
The central, rounded housing of a vehicle's differential assembly, located on the axle. This cast-iron casing contains the ring and pinion gears that transfer power from the driveshaft to the wheels while allowing them to rotate at different speeds during turns. The name comes from its bulbous, pumpkin-like shape, which is most prominent on solid-axle trucks and rear-wheel-drive cars.
