Railway key
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004677
A wedge, traditionally made of treated wood or spring steel, used to secure a bullhead rail in its cast-iron chair, which is spiked to a wooden sleeper. The key is driven horizontally into the gap between the rail web and the chair jaw, holding the rail firmly in a vertical position. On curved track, keys are placed on the outside of the curve to resist the lateral forces exerted by passing trains.
