A mechanical device used to operate a lock, consisting of a metal shaft with a unique series of cuts or bittings that correspond to the internal tumblers of the lock. When inserted and turned, the bittings align the tumblers, allowing the bolt to retract or extend. Keys are typically made from brass, nickel silver, or steel.
