Keyway

A longitudinal slot or recess machined into a shaft or the bore of a mating component like a gear, pulley, or coupling. A corresponding piece of metal, called a key, fits snugly into the keyway on the shaft and the one in the hub, locking the two parts together to prevent relative angular motion and transmit torque. Common profiles include rectangular, square, and the semicircular Woodruff key, with dimensions specified by standards such as ANSI B17.1 for inch-based systems.
