Scale

A thin layer of oxidized material that forms on the surface of metals, particularly iron and steel, when exposed to high temperatures or corrosive environments. This can also refer to a measuring instrument or a proportion used to represent a larger object or area. In manufacturing, mill scale is a common byproduct of hot rolling processes.
