A characteristic dimension or magnitude used to classify atmospheric phenomena based on their spatial or temporal extent. Meteorological processes are often categorized into synoptic scale, mesoscale, and microscale, each associated with different physical mechanisms and observational techniques. For instance, a synoptic scale event covers hundreds to thousands of kilometers and lasts for days.
