To clear away fallen stone, loose rubble, or other debris from a working so that the place can be used again, or to strip the worthless cover from above a deposit before digging. The word is a variant of redd. As a noun it names the loose earth and rubble lying on a quarry or deposit, which is cleared before digging begins.
