An abbreviation for Research Octane Number, a standard measure of a gasoline's resistance to engine knocking or pre-ignition. The rating is determined by running the fuel in a test engine under controlled, low-severity conditions. Most countries, including those in Europe and Australia, display the RON on fuel pumps, where standard unleaded is 91 or 95 and premium is 98.
