Sander

A device on a locomotive that dispenses sand onto the running rails directly in front of the driving wheels. This action increases the coefficient of friction between the wheels and the rail, enhancing adhesion for starting, accelerating, or braking. Sanders are activated by the locomotive engineer, especially in slippery conditions.
