Sanding gear

A system on railway locomotives and trams that applies sand or a similar abrasive material to the railhead in front of the driving wheels. This increases the friction between the wheels and the track, improving traction during acceleration and braking, especially in adverse weather conditions. The sand is stored in a sand dome or box and delivered through pipes to the rail.
