Shank

The non-working portion of a tool, such as a drill bit, reamer, or end mill, that is held by a chuck, collet, or other tool holder. It provides the means for transmitting torque and axial force from the machine to the tool's working end. Shanks can be cylindrical, tapered, or have flats for secure gripping.
