A machine tool that produces flat surfaces, grooves, or other forms by reciprocating a single-point cutting tool across a stationary workpiece. The tool moves in a straight line, removing material on the forward stroke. Shapers are often used for machining flat surfaces, keyways, and dovetails, particularly on smaller workpieces.
