Quill
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-007191
A hollow, cylindrical shaft or housing that slides axially but does not rotate, used to advance a rotating spindle. In machine tools like drill presses and milling machines, the quill holds the chuck or collet and is moved up or down by a hand-operated lever or wheel to feed the cutting tool into the workpiece. The depth of the cut is controlled by the distance the quill travels, which is often indicated on a calibrated scale or digital readout.
