Somersault signal
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005466
An early type of railway semaphore signal where the arm pivots near its center, allowing it to 'somersault' from the horizontal 'stop' position to a downward-angled 'clear' position. This design was intended to prevent false clear indications if the arm broke. It was largely superseded by lower-quadrant and upper-quadrant semaphore signals.
