Spark test
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005499
A non-destructive method used to identify different types of ferrous metals by observing the characteristics of sparks produced when the metal is ground against an abrasive wheel. Each metal alloy produces a unique spark pattern, including variations in color, length, and the presence of bursts or 'stars.' This test provides a quick, qualitative assessment of the material's composition, particularly its carbon content. It is a common practice in workshops for material sorting.
