A solar particle event: a burst of energetic protons and heavier ions accelerated near the Sun by a flare or a coronal mass ejection shock and flung into interplanetary space. Arriving within minutes to hours, it raises radiation doses for astronauts, can damage spacecraft electronics and solar cells, and adds exposure for crews of aircraft on polar routes.
