Splay

A flared or angled surface at a road junction or vehicle access point designed to improve visibility for drivers. A visibility splay is an area of land kept clear of obstructions, allowing drivers emerging from a minor road or accessway to see approaching traffic on the major road. The required dimensions of the splay, defined by 'x' and 'y' distances, are specified in local planning and highway authority design standards.
