Starling
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-007276
A protective structure built around the base of a bridge pier, designed to reduce the effects of water flow and ice impact. It presents a sharpened or rounded profile to the current, either upstream (a cutwater) or downstream (an easewater), deflecting water and floating debris to minimize scour erosion around the foundation. The geometry, whether triangular, semicircular, or more complex, is engineered based on hydraulic studies of the river's velocity and potential for ice floes.
