Floating ground

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002353

A circuit's common reference point that is not electrically connected to the Earth ground of the main power system. This technique is used in isolated power supplies and certain measurement instruments to prevent ground loops and reduce noise interference by separating the circuit's reference from the building's ground potential. The voltage difference between the floating ground and Earth ground is not fixed and can vary depending on circuit conditions and external fields.
