Floating-point unit

A specialized part of a computer's central processing unit (CPU) or a coprocessor designed to perform arithmetic operations on floating-point numbers. These operations include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of numbers with fractional parts, which are represented with a fixed number of significant digits and an exponent. Modern CPUs integrate FPUs to accelerate calculations in scientific computing, graphics rendering, and digital signal processing.
