The retention of data in an electromagnetic or optical form so it can be retrieved later by a computer or electronic system. Storage is categorized as either volatile, which requires continuous power to maintain data, or non-volatile, which retains data after power is removed. Random-access memory (RAM) is a primary example of volatile storage, while hard disk drives exemplify non-volatile storage.
