Sway
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005797
The lateral, side-to-side rolling motion of a vehicle's body during cornering, lane changes, or when exposed to crosswinds. This body roll occurs as centrifugal force shifts the vehicle's center of gravity, causing the suspension on the outside of the turn to compress and the inside suspension to extend. The amount of sway is primarily controlled by the stiffness of the suspension springs, shock absorbers, and the presence of an anti-sway bar, also known as a stabilizer bar, which connects opposite sides of the suspension.
