Kinematic envelope

The maximum space occupied by a railway vehicle, including all its movements such as body sway, suspension travel, and wheel flange clearance, as it travels along a track. This envelope defines the minimum clearance required for tunnels, bridges, and other trackside structures to prevent collisions. It is larger than the static loading gauge of the vehicle.
