Trunk call

A long-distance telephone call connected through one or more switching centers over the main telecommunication network, or trunk lines, that link different exchanges. The term originated in manual switchboard operations where operators connected calls between distant towns or cities. Historically, these calls were billed at a higher rate than local calls, based on distance and duration.
