Turtle

A heavy, curved cast-iron frame used in historical rotary printing presses to hold and secure a page of type. The type was locked into the turtle, which was then mounted onto the press cylinder for high-speed printing. This method was an intermediate step between flatbed printing and the use of curved stereotype plates.
