Vinculum

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006456

A horizontal line drawn over a group of mathematical terms to indicate that they should be treated as a single unit, similar to parentheses. In surveying calculations and historical mathematical notations, it was used to group quantities for operations like multiplication, division, or taking a square root. While still seen in some contexts, its use has largely been superseded by parentheses for clarity in modern algebraic notation.
