A plant that grows from seed dropped during a previous harvest or from an adjacent field, rather than being intentionally planted. These plants can compete with the desired crop for nutrients, water, and sunlight, potentially reducing yields. Farmers often control volunteer plants through tillage, herbicides, or crop rotation.
