Wane

The presence of original rounded surface or bark on the edge or corner of a piece of sawn lumber, indicating that the cut did not fully remove the sapwood or bark. It is considered a defect in finished lumber as it reduces the usable cross-section and can affect stability. The amount of wane allowed is often specified by grading standards.
