Assigned risk plan (AR)

A state-administered program that provides insurance coverage to individuals or businesses unable to obtain it in the voluntary market. Insurers doing business in the state are required to accept a share of these high-risk applicants, with the number of assigned risks proportional to their market share. These assigned risk (AR) plans are most prevalent in auto insurance, providing a last-resort option for drivers with poor records to meet mandatory liability insurance laws.
