Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA)

A federal law in the United States that provides a Superfund to clean up uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites as well as accidents, spills, and other emergency releases of pollutants. This act holds responsible parties liable for cleanup costs, even if their actions were legal at the time of disposal. It established the polluter pays principle for environmental remediation.
