Superfund

A federal program established by the United States government to clean up sites contaminated with hazardous substances. It is officially known as the Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) of 1980. The program holds responsible parties liable for cleanup costs, and if they cannot be identified or are insolvent, a trust fund pays for the remediation.
