Superfund

A United States federal government program designed to fund the cleanup of sites contaminated with hazardous substances. Established in 1980 by the Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), the program grants the Environmental Protection Agency authority to identify parties responsible for contamination. The EPA can compel these parties to clean up the sites or reimburse the government for cleanup costs.
