Competent authority

A governmental agency or other official body legally empowered to perform a designated function or to exercise jurisdiction over a particular matter. This authority is responsible for setting and enforcing regulations, standards, or policies within its domain. In toxicology, a competent authority might regulate chemical safety or approve new pharmaceutical products.
