Tolerable weekly intake

A quantity of a potentially harmful substance, typically a contaminant such as cadmium, that a person can take in each week throughout life with no appreciable health risk, as estimated from toxicological studies. It is expressed per kilogram of body weight per week, a period suited to substances that accumulate in the body or are not eaten every day. The European Food Safety Authority, for example, has set one for cadmium.
