Tolerable daily intake

An estimate of how much of a substance in food or drinking water a person can take in each day throughout life with no appreciable risk to health. It is calculated from toxicological studies by dividing a no-effect level by a safety factor, often 100, to cover uncertainty, and it is stated in milligrams of substance per kilogram of body weight per day.
