Death on the High Seas Act (DOHSA)

A federal statute that provides a cause of action for wrongful death occurring on the high seas, beyond three nautical miles from the shore of any state. It allows the personal representative of the deceased to sue for pecuniary damages, such as loss of financial support and services. This act applies to deaths resulting from negligence, unseaworthiness, or default occurring on vessels or aircraft over international waters.
