Friendly fire

A fire that remains within its intended or usual confines, such as a fire in a fireplace, furnace, or stove. Damage caused by smoke or soot from a friendly fire is generally covered by property insurance, but damage from the fire itself is not. This distinguishes it from a hostile fire, which escapes its intended boundaries and causes direct damage.
