A method of dividing insurance proceeds or an estate in which each person in a designated class receives an equal share, counted by head. If one of three named beneficiaries has died, the survivors split the proceeds equally and the deceased beneficiary's children receive nothing, unlike per stirpes distribution, where descendants take their ancestor's share.
