Reinsurance ceded

The portion of risk that a primary insurer transfers to a reinsurer. This reduces the primary insurer's exposure to potential losses and allows it to underwrite more policies than its capital alone would permit. Ceded reinsurance is recorded as an asset on the ceding insurer's balance sheet.
