Rule 11 sanctions

Penalties imposed by a court under Rule 11 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure for presenting to the court a pleading, written motion, or other paper for an improper purpose, or for making frivolous arguments. In insurance litigation, these sanctions can be levied against parties or their attorneys for filing baseless claims or defenses. They aim to deter abuses of the litigation process.
