Strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP)

Term · Insurance and risk management · MLC-T-INS-003203

A civil complaint or counterclaim filed against individuals or organizations who speak out on an issue of public interest or concern. The primary goal of a strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPP) is not to win the case on its merits but to intimidate, silence, or burden critics with the high cost of a legal defense. Many U.S. states have enacted anti-SLAPP statutes that provide a mechanism for early dismissal of such lawsuits and the recovery of attorney's fees.
