Policy language in liability insurance that limits coverage for pollution or other environmental damage to incidents that are abrupt, unintended, and unexpected from the standpoint of the insured. This phrase typically excludes coverage for gradual pollution or contamination that occurs over an extended period. Many modern policies use absolute pollution exclusions instead of this phrase.
