Triggering event theory

A legal doctrine used in insurance to determine which liability policy or policies are activated when an injury or damage occurs over an extended period. This theory establishes the point in time when coverage is triggered, which can be at exposure to the harmful condition, manifestation of the injury, or during the entire period of exposure and manifestation. Courts apply different interpretations of this theory depending on the jurisdiction and policy language.
