The provision of financial assistance to a failing business, financial institution, or government to prevent its collapse, which could have wider negative economic consequences. This support can take the form of loans, equity injections, or the purchase of distressed assets. The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 authorized the U.S. Treasury to purchase up to $700 billion in troubled assets from financial institutions.
