Bequest
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-000703
A gift of personal property, such as cash, stocks, or jewelry, made through a will. Unlike a devise, which transfers real property, a bequest deals with movable assets and the recipient is known as a legatee. Bequests are classified as specific (a particular item), general (from the estate's overall assets), or demonstrative (from a specific source), which affects how they are treated during the abatement process if the estate's assets are insufficient to cover all obligations.
