Conditional bequest

A gift of personal property made in a will that is dependent upon the occurrence or non-occurrence of a specified event or condition. If the condition is not met, the bequest may fail, and the property will pass to another beneficiary or revert to the residuary estate. Such conditions must not be illegal or against public policy to be enforceable.
