Civil code
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-000993
A systematic collection of private law rules on contracts, property, family and obligations, arranged by subject so that the code serves as the primary source of law in civil law systems. Louisiana is the only U.S. state whose private law rests on a civil-law code, shaped by French and Spanish law and the Napoleonic Code. Other states, such as California, publish statutes under the title civil code, but their law remains common law.
