A noncriminal lawsuit initiated by a private party, the plaintiff, against another party, the defendant, to resolve a dispute or seek a remedy for a private wrong. These actions address matters such as breach of contract, property damage, or personal injury, and do not involve criminal penalties like imprisonment. The standard of proof required for a plaintiff to win is a preponderance of the evidence, which is a lower threshold than the beyond a reasonable doubt standard used in criminal proceedings.
