Beyond a reasonable doubt

The highest standard of proof required in criminal cases, meaning that the evidence presented must be so convincing that no reasonable person would question the defendant's guilt. This standard places a heavy burden on the prosecution to eliminate any reasonable doubt in the minds of the jurors. It is a cornerstone of the presumption of innocence.
